Overall Reflection

1) Experience

At the beginning of the module, I found typography quite overwhelming because there were many terms and rules that I had never paid attention to before. In Task 1, learning about type anatomy, spacing, and alignment made me realise how much detail exists behind something that usually feels invisible. Doing the exercises helped me slow down and focus on precision, especially when adjusting kerning and layout, which required a lot more patience than I expected.

When working on Task 2, I experienced a shift from learning rules to applying them in design. Creating typographic layouts forced me to think about how readers move through text and how hierarchy affects understanding. I spent a lot of time revising my layouts, as small changes in leading or alignment could completely change the balance of the composition. Although the process was time-consuming, it helped me become more confident in making design decisions.

Task 3 was the most challenging experience for me, as designing a typeface from scratch was something I had never done before. Sketching and refining letterforms made me more aware of consistency, proportion, and detail. Digitising the type and applying it to final outputs was difficult, but seeing my own font "Root Box" used in a real design was very rewarding and gave me a strong sense of accomplishment.

2) Observations

Throughout the three tasks, I observed that typography relies heavily on careful attention to detail. Even small issues like uneven spacing or inconsistent stroke weight became very noticeable once I started looking at type more critically. This made me realise that good typography often goes unnoticed, but poor typography is immediately obvious.

I also noticed how typography directly affects communication. In Task 2, I observed that clear hierarchy and alignment made the content easier to read and understand. When hierarchy was weak, the layout felt confusing even if the text itself was correct. This showed me that typography plays a key role in guiding the reader rather than simply presenting information.

Another important observation was how necessary iteration is in the design process. My first ideas were rarely the strongest, and improvement came through constant testing, feedback, and refinement. This helped me understand that design is not about getting things right immediately, but about being willing to rework and improve ideas.

3) Findings

Through this Typography module, I found that my approach to typography became more careful and intentional. I am now more aware of spacing, alignment, and structure when working with text, instead of choosing type based purely on appearance. These skills have helped me feel more confident when handling typographic layouts.

I also discovered that typography requires a strong balance between creativity and discipline. Especially in Task 3, I learned that personal expression must still follow structural consistency in order to work effectively. This changed the way I think about creativity, showing me that rules can actually support better design outcomes.

Finally, I found that typography has changed how I view everyday visual communication. I now notice fonts, spacing, and layouts in posters, websites, and packaging that I previously ignored. This module not only improved my technical skills but also trained my eye, allowing me to approach future design projects with a deeper understanding and appreciation of typography.
