Task 1

Three favourite Zach King's visual effects video

Visual effects video 1: The Magical Night Before Christmas

I like this video because the style feels like a Christmas fairy tale, with a mix of family warmth and magical wonder. The art direction uses detailed set design like decorated trees, fairy lights, cozy living room props that make the world feel festive and believable. The character design shows Zach as an ordinary guy experiencing magical surprises, which make it easy for viewers to relate to him. The visual effects are very polished: objects transform and move in ways that feel seamless, as if the magic naturally belongs in this holiday setting.

Visual effects video 2: Zach King's Day Off

This one caught my attention because of its playful style, which feels like a throwback to classic movies. The art direction uses everyday locations and props in a creative way, turning normal spaces into places where unexpected things can happen. The character design shows Zach as the fun, mischievous type, which matches the tone of the video. The visual effects are timed perfectly with his actions, making the illusions surprising but still natural.

Visual effects video 3: How Zach King Gets Away with Doing Graffiti

I like this short because its style is quick, light, and clever. The art direction is minimal with just a wall and spray paint, but that simplicity makes the trick stand out even more. The character design shows Zach as a playful rule-breaker, which adds humor to the scene. The visual effects are subtle but smart, using editing and perspective to make something ordinary feel magical.

Final Project

Visual Effects Video

Pre-production

Step 1:

group formation

We are required to form groups of two to work on the final project.

Step 2:

VFX tutorials

We were asked to find two to three VFX tutorials we like from any social media platform.

Step 3:

theme & synopsis

Think of a theme and synopsis that we want to help us have a clear guideline.

Step 4:

storyboard

Based on the VFX tutorials we choose, we then need to create our own storyboard (for our 1-minute visual effects video) and incorporate two to three of the VFX techniques into our project.

Reflection

In Final Project : Visual Effects Video, my partner and I created a one-minute visual effects video. This project brought together everything I learned throughout the semester, from planning and shooting to editing and sound design. Compared to earlier projects, this felt more complete and challenging because every decision we made had a direct impact on the final outcome.

During the planning stage, we spent time developing the idea, theme, and storyboard. Working on the storyboard helped me visualise how the scenes would flow and how the visual effects would be applied later. I realised that when a project involves VFX, planning becomes even more important, as mistakes during filming are harder to fix in post-production.

When it came to shooting, I learned to be more intentional with my shots. Instead of just capturing footage, I had to think about camera angles, framing, and how the actor would interact with the visual effects. This changed the way I approached filming and made me more aware of how each shot contributes to the story.

The editing stage was the most challenging but also the most rewarding part of the project. Using After Effects and Premiere Pro, I worked on creating visual effects, arranging clips, adding sound effects, and adjusting colours. Through this process, I learned how much small details matter — even minor timing or sound adjustments can greatly affect how smooth and believable the video feels. I also became more confident using editing software and solving problems when effects did not turn out as expected.

Looking back, there are areas I can improve. Some shots could have been filmed better if we had tested angles and lighting more carefully beforehand. Time management was also a challenge, as editing took longer than expected, leaving less time for final refinements. In future projects, I want to plan my time better and leave more space for polishing details.

Overall, this final project helped me see how all parts of video production connect with each other. I can clearly see my improvement compared to earlier projects, especially in planning, editing, and understanding how sound and visuals work together. Moving forward, I hope to continue improving my technical skills while creating videos that feel more natural, engaging, and professional.
