Design decisions :

In my redesign, I maintained the key visual elements from the original poster, such as the Death's-Head Hawkmoth, to maintain the film’s eerie symbolism. However, I enhanced the horror elements by incorporating a large knife with blood, reinforcing the movie’s themes of violence and psychological terror. The background, filled with red, glowing eyes, conveys the unsettling presence of observation, paranoia, and psychological manipulation central to the story. The bold, red typography enhances the sense of urgency and dread, making the title more imposing and dramatic.

Meaning & purpose :

The purpose of my redesign was to emphasise the psychological horror and suspense of the film. The knife piercing through the moth represents the brutality of Buffalo Bill’s murders, as well as the psychological warfare between Clarice and Hannibal Lecter. The dripping blood reinforces the film’s theme of death and transformation. The watchful eyes in the background symbolise Hannibal’s omnipresent intelligence and Clarice’s constant feeling of being observed and judged.

Design principles employed :

(1) Contrast – The bright moth and the vibrant red elements contrast with the dark background, making key features stand out.

(2) Balance – The symmetrical placement of the moth and knife creates visual stability.

(3) Emphasis – The knife and blood draw immediate attention, reinforcing the film's violent themes.

(4) Repetition – The multiple red eyes in the background create a sense of paranoia and psychological unease.

(5) Typography – The bold, red title enhances readability and intensifies the dramatic effect.

(6) Unity – All elements (moth, knife, blood, eyes) work together to create a cohesive and haunting composition.
