Final Design From Task 3

LIM JIA YU_THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS_TASK 3

Final Reflection

Looking back at this short but intense semester in the Design Principles course, I realise how much I’ve grown. Not only in technical knowledge but also in my understanding of visual communication and creative thinking. This module wasn’t just about learning theories,  it was about applying them, analysing real-world design works, and eventually creating something of my own.

What have I learnt in this module?

Throughout this module, I explored key design principles like Gestalt theory, contrast, emphasis, balance, repetition, movement, and more. Initially, they seemed like abstract concepts, but as I analyzed different artworks and applied these principles in my projects, I began to see how they influence design in a practical way. I learned how to break down a design piece, identify what makes it effective, and even suggest improvements like skills that will definitely help me in future creative projects.

One of the most valuable lessons was understanding how small details like colour choices, typography, and spacing can completely change how a design is perceived. I also became more aware of how design is used in everyday life, from branding to user interfaces, making me appreciate the thought process behind things I used to overlook.

What did I enjoy the most?

One of the best parts of this module was the hands-on nature of the tasks, especially Task 3, where I got to bring my ideas to life through design development. Being able to take inspiration from existing works and then create my own version felt incredibly rewarding. I also loved the creative freedom I had while experimenting with different compositions and layouts.

Another highlight was the process of visual analysis. At first, it seemed like a challenging task, but as I read through the lecture slides, I found it interesting to dissect artworks, identify design choices, and think critically about why certain elements worked better than others.

What did I not enjoy the most?

If I had to pick something I didn’t enjoy as much, it would be the strict guidelines about plagiarism and AI tools. While I completely understand the importance of originality, it sometimes felt a bit limiting, especially when I wanted to explore AI-generated design for inspiration. However, this challenge also pushed me to be more resourceful and develop my own creative ideas from scratch, which I now appreciate.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

This course taught me that I enjoy analyzing and breaking down visual elements more than I expected. I’ve realized that I naturally pay attention to structure, harmony, and how different design elements interact. I also discovered that I love working with contrast and bold compositions. More importantly, I learned that I have a tendency to overthink my creative process, which sometimes slows me down. This module helped me trust my instincts more and just go with the flow when designing.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

One major change is that I now approach design with a more critical eye. Before, I would create something based on what looked good to me, but now, I think about the why behind my choices. I ask myself questions like "Does this design have enough contrast?", "Is the balance working well?", "How is the viewer’s eye guided through the composition?".

However, what hasn’t changed is my curiosity and eagerness to learn. I still enjoy experimenting with new styles and pushing my creative limits, and this course has only strengthened that passion.

What are my aspirations?

Moving forward, I want to continue improving my design skills, especially in areas like composition and typography. This course has given me a strong foundation, and I’m excited to build on it by learning more advanced techniques and software tools. Ultimately, I aspire to create designs that are not only visually appealing but also meaningful and effective in communicating a message.

Overall, Design Principles was a challenging but rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned. It has not only improved my technical skills but also changed the way I see and appreciate design in the world around me.
